Maurice Amdur, Tarot Reading

Star reader to the stars

Forget American Psyco – with the return of celebrity clairvoyant Maurice Amdur to St. John’s Wood, reporter Roz Britton predicts that this year will see the rise of the American Psychic

Justin Timberlake, Naomi Campbell, AI Pacino and Jennifer Lopez are just a few of the names that regularly appear in clairvoyant Maurice Amdur's appointments book.

A virtual unknown in his native Britain, for the past 10 years the psychic has been building a successful career in Hollywood where the cream of La la's royalty have been beating a path to his door.

However, British obscurity could soon be a thing of the past, for the star's star reader is now returning to his St John's Wood home where he plans to read for the great and the good of London town and secure a clairvoyant chat show with a UK channel.

Few men who have enjoyed the pleasures of the Hugh Hefner mansion Mr. Amdur has read for numerous Playmates –  would be willing to trade in a lifestyle of which many young boys dream for the grit and grime of London living. So why has he suddenly decided to journey across the Atlantic?

"I decided to move over to Britain for health reasons," he revealed. "I need to have some work done on my leg and I prefer British healthcare to American. I also have a very large family over here and I have missed them."

Building a reputation in Hollywood was relatively easy for Mr. Amdur, thanks to the town's leading funny girl. "One of the first people I read for in America was Barbra Streisand.  After that, I got handed around in the States and, like gum, I soon became flavour of the month.  I was everybody's favourite Christmas present."

Stateside, Mr. Amdur has made his career from predicting the unpredictable.  Whereas many of us were surprised by the marriage of Welsh beauty Catherine Zeta Jones to Michael Douglas, Mr. Amdur did not so much as bat an eyelid.  He had described the event to a British tabloid some years previously.

But these predictions do not come cheap. "I charge £150 for half an hour," he said. "However, if people do not feel that I am entirely accurate, I do not wish to be paid. To date that has never happened."

Although the clairvoyant has come to be regarded as a life coach by many celebrities, his entry into the profession was decidedly more self-motivated.

"There was a girl that I wanted to sleep with," he confessed."She handed me a tarot deck and asked if I could read them. I said yes, despite not knowing that I could, and arranged them in this silly spread.

"As I began to read, I saw and told her of her future engagement. Needless to say, that was the end of that!"

Mr. Amdur believes that he has the rare ability to communicate with the dead. "If I could choose any deceased person to talk to, it would be my grandmother, because I love her more than anything else in the world," he said.
